NIE number for Spain

What is an NIE number?

An NIE number is a form of identification number or tax number that is required in Spain if you are not a Spanish citizen. NIE number stands for ‘Número de identidad de extranjero’. You will need to have an NIE number in order to open a bank account, buy a property, enter into various contracts, for example for electricity and water, to buy a car, etc.

You can also apply to the Spanish police for an NIE number when you are in Spain.  Alternatively, you can also apply for one at the Spanish Embassy in Stockholm. They will be able to provide you with information about how to proceed. Your estate agent or legal representative in Spain may also be able to provide you with information about this.
